DVD Duplication The Next Stage in Data Replication

Monday, July 31st, 2006

Recent years have witness the transition of DVDs from high-end consumer indulgence to its current position as an item as commonplace as the CD. The higher storage capacity of DVDs for data of all kinds makes this trend an advantageous one, as this higher capacity means you can do much more, much better.

The flexibility of the data storage offered by the DVD medium means that this simple tool can store all kinds of information, including computer files, music tracks and even video recordings. The ability to create these types of disk is undoubtedly a wonderful data storage tool, but there are times when you will want to share the information included on them with friends or colleagues. To do this, you will need to make copies of your DVD.

It is a simple process, but you’ll need the right software for the job. Unfortunately, the typical computer software that allows you to create word processing or other documents doesn’t include integrated DVD burning software, so in order to duplicate your disks you will need to look at the alternatives. These include such software as Nero Burning ROM and Roxio Creator suite. These programs will allow you to copy a DVD, regardless of what type of data is stored upon it. The software works by first copying the contents of the disk onto your hard drive. You will then be asked to insert a blank disk into your computer, to which the special software will transfer all the information contained on the original. Depending on the speed of your DVD drive’s ability to read the original disk, and the speed at which the burner can write to the disk, the whole process can take anywhere between 8 and 20 minutes for a full 4.5 GB disk.

And if you use DVD video creation software this will allow you to produce multiple copies of the DVD that you have created!

In rare cases you may wish to copy a dual layer video DVD onto a single layer disk. Since dual layer disks have twice the capacity of a standard disk, a straight copy is not possible. In order to make a duplicate you will have to use software to compress the video further and reduce the overall file sizes in order to squeeze the video onto the disk. DVD Shrink can be used to carry out this operation. Though the end result may be slightly reduced in quality, this difference is not considerable.

DVDs represent the next level of all kinds of data storage – are you ready to take the next step?

Enrolling in a Paralegal School

Sunday, July 30th, 2006

Some paralegal positions do not require extensive training and provide it on-the-job. However, most employers prefer applicants who have had formal training in a paralegal school. These law firms need paralegals who already demonstrate proficiency. On-the-job training calls for a commitment of more resources and time, which may not be cost effective for the firm.

Because of the increasing demand for paralegals that specialize in particular fields, paralegal training courses and paralegal schools have also gained popularity. For those considering a career in this field, enrolling in a paralegal school is a good decision. A paralegal school will provide extensive training on the duties and functions of a paralegal. The training that a paralegal school provides is very advantageous to the student compared to on-the-job-training. In a paralegal school, future paralegals can complete paralegal training programs and even proceed to taking additional classes in a specialized area of study.

General paralegal training in a paralegal school usually consist of special courses that cover key areas of importance. Paralegal training programs in paralegal schools include classes in legal terminology as well as the operation of the US Justice System. Paralegal schools also train students on the basics of conducting an investigation and interviews. Some other key courses that paralegal schools offer include legal writing and conducting legal research. Students will also learn about legal ethics and professional responsibility. Paralegal schools are excellent training ground for future legal professionals. Some paralegal schools provide affiliate programs with law schools, universities and colleges that could further improve the skills and knowledge of its students.

Paralegal schools also offer elective course that are geared towards specific areas of study. Today’s paralegal schools have introduced new courses and classes that cover the newfound duties of paralegals. As demand for paralegals increase the duties that a paralegal performs also increases. Many law firms expect paralegals to perform duties that only lawyers used to do. These duties are offered as training courses in most paralegal schools. Thus, enrolling in a paralegal school greatly benefits the future paralegal. By completing the advanced courses that accredited paralegal schools offer, the future paralegal can acquire skills and knowledge that will give him the edge when applying for a legal professional job. Paralegal schools can also open the opportunity of specialization that will further improve the chances of employment as more law firms favor applicants with specialized skills.

The internet revolution also offers a new, more convenient way for potential paralegals to obtain formal training and instruction. Online paralegal schools now offer distance learning courses that students can take in their own homes and at their own pace. Students can now take paralegal courses at their most convenient time. This further enhances the rising popularity and demand for paralegals in the country.]]>

Environmental Trends In Elearning Reviewed

Saturday, July 29th, 2006

In the late 1990’s, however, college academia took a giant step forward in elearning by introducing courses that could be taken entirely online. The environmental trends in elearning have changed dramatically from the infrequent use of the Internet and elearning to relying on the elearning for an entire course.

This environmental trend in elearning opened up the opportunity to study at the college level to many more students. Technical colleges, for example, are home to many nontraditional older students. These students have full time jobs, families, and little free time. It is difficult to miss work to attend class during the day. Night classes are possible, but that means less time with family. That is when an online course can save the day and allow these types of students to work on their degree.

Online courses are available at many four-year and two-year colleges and universities. In the last few years, online colleges have emerged that offer an entire degree program online. These comprehensive courses of study allow a more diverse student population to have access to the education they seek.

Another environmental trend in elearning is the way classes are conducted. Classes are administered through software programs such as Blackboard and WebCT. These web-based programs allow students to login to a virtual classroom. They can access course materials such as lecture notes, assignments, and tests. They can communicate with the instructor and other classmates through email messages and a class message forum.

Professors, teachers, and instructors also have an array of options. There are calendar, email, and syllabus tools. Electronic grade books are a nice feature of elearning software programs. Electronic grade books are more than just a repository of grades. They can actually calculate final grades based on specific classroom grading criteria and policies. This is a welcome addition for many teachers that are technologically savvy. Plus students can view their grades online throughout the semester and track their progress.

As technology progresses so will the elearning environment. The academic options are far different from what they were even ten years ago. Imagine what the options will entail ten years from now.]]>

You have precisely made up your mind to master foreign language and to bring the knowledge of this language to perfection? For sure you want to prove yourself that you can cope with mastering a foreign language. Good command of this language became the point of honor for you or you just want to understand what the beset people are talking about. You may need the knowledge of this language for studying, work or business. In a word, you want to grapple this troublesome point last and all the time. No problems, all these goals are achievable; the main point is to have a strong motivation and to be consistent with what exactly you want to attain, to have an eager desire to cognate the language and to find a place where all your plans will see their realization.

This place is highly qualified language courses with One-to-One teaching by experienced teacher in a relaxed home atmosphere and perfect acquisition of this language is in the bag. Nothing of the sort. Preliminary, you have to confront with the choice of language courses. It is a well-known fact that a variety of foreign language courses is rather broad and bewildering. There are estimated to be more than 1000 language courses in the UK. It will be rather difficult to enumerate the quantity of such organizations in the USA. It can absolutely distract you. As they sprang up like mushrooms and it is very easy to go astray in their diversity, even for the most versed teacher.

NB! All of these criteria are based on the personal experience, tested in practice and provided with the pin - point comments.

Pay special attention to these points when you choose the courses to attend.

•The facilities the courses have: libraries, study room, computers and special learning language facilities.
Remember that technical support of studying is very important as it can make the process of language acquisition less laborious, but more enjoyable and can enhance the results of your studying and speed up the process of mastering the language.

•The location of the courses.
It is clear that you are ready to overcome any obstacles on your way to language acquisition, but you can not but agree with me that it would be more suitable if the courses were located somewhere not too far a way from your house or dormitory.

•The size of the class.
A class size of up to 10 students is small; 10-15 is average and over the class which includes 15 students is large. Keep in mind one very significant point when choosing the courses. The smaller the group is the better it is. It can be explained very easily if there are few people in the class a teacher can approach to each student individually.

•The levels of abilities the classes are divided into and the way they are determined.
It is important for you to be in the class with the students who have approximately the same level of abilities as you do, because the appropriate course of studying is sorted out according to the level of language acquisition you acquire. Be sure to write a test which will determine the level of your language acquisition and your abilities.

•The quantity of hours of classes per week.
At least 15 hours per week are required for a student visa. It is also significant for a kind of program you’ll choose. For instance, if you choose the intensive course so the quantity of hours of classes per week increases twice from the quantity of hours required for the standard course.

•The time of the day the classes are held.
The prices for morning, afternoon and evening classes usually vary. So if time permits make use of the opportunity to pay less for the courses and to choose the morning or afternoon groups, as the fee for these classes is always lower.

•The nationality and age of your classmates.
Remember that if the proportion of the foreign students is more than a half, it is more evidently that studying in such class will present some difficulties for you; hence it’ll be better to refuse from such a proposal. The age is also important, because people of different ages perceive information in different ways, quicker or slower, so the types of exercises and the speed of studying will be different.

• The qualification and experience of the teacher.
It is not a secret for anyone that approximately 30 percents of academic success depends on the teacher, so redouble your vigilance at the very first test lesson in the courses and make sure that the manner of teaching and personality of the teacher suit you. If you have any hesitations change to study under different teacher without any doubts.

•The nationality of the teacher.
Remember that it is better if the teacher is a native speaker of the language.

•The textbooks and teaching methods which are utilized.

•The credibility of the courses.
Note that if the courses were established not so long time ago, it is more evidently that they didn’t establish solid reputation and wouldn’t be able to provide you with all the necessary facilities, professional teachers and guarantee you respectable certificate.

•The recognition of the courses by the Council of the country the language of which you are studying.
This factor is highly important when choosing language courses. If the courses are recognized by the Council it acknowledges that the level of language teaching offered in these courses is adequate. Keep in mind that courses attached to the Council are always more respectable. First, the tutors there are native speakers. Second, the certificate of The Council is generally accepted.

•The curriculum of the course.
Clarify at once whether the course you are going to take is a set of modules designed for students taking short-term courses or it is a full structured course.
Keep in mind that the way the language is taught is a very important point, because the methodic of teaching foreign language as a second language differs much from the methodic of teaching this language as a native one.

•The variety of programs the courses can offer (business, conversational language, language for some specific fields, for Law, for medicine, intensive course).
The diversity of the languages and programs the courses can propose adds up to their credibility and reliability.

•The longevity of holidays.
For sure there must be a break in studying, but it mustn’t be too long for you not to forget everything you’ve learned. You must be in the language speaking environment as much as possible. Hence, the language must be on the credit side, you should use the language actively.

•The courses fee.
Check all the money details very carefully. Check whether the registration fee is included in the general price for course. Get to know what a variation of fee for different programs is. Make sure if there any discounts for the program you are going to attend.

•The organization of any extracurricular activities: social events, excursions, discussion halls.
Get to know if there is any extra charge for these.

Hope that these selection criteria of the foreign language courses will come in handy to you and will help you choose the courses where you master the language perfectly well. Test them in practice and make certain that they are sure fire to work.]]>

Federal Loans - What the Government Does to Help You Pay for School

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

Going to college in America these days is not something for those with weak pocketbooks, as money is of the essence when attending any college or university within the country. Though it is well worth it for anyone to attend college, most people cannot afford to pay for college directly out of their pocket. This is why the federal government offers different types of loans to help you to pay for school. Between Federal Stafford Loans and Federal PLUS Loans, you should be able to receive money for college and receive the quality education that you are seeking.

Federal Stafford Loans
A Federal Stafford Loan from the government is one of the most affordable options for a potential college student looking to find money to pay his/her way through higher education. Interest rates on these loans are often much lower than other options, as the current all-time low of just under 4% is very, very low. While these loans are usually fairly large, no credit check is required to receive a Federal Stafford Loan and no collateral must be put up. However, the best part of all may be that Federal Stafford Loans do not have to be paid back until after you graduate! That means one less stressor during your college years.

Federal PLUS Loans
Aside from a Federal Stafford Loan, students may also choose to bring their parents into the equation with a Federal PLUS Loan, which allows parents of students to borrow federal funds and pay college tuition. In this case, a credit check is required, but PLUS Loans allow parents to supplement any amount of money that is needed for college after other forms of financial aid are allocated to the student. Either through the use of Stafford Loans or PLUS Loans, students can use the federal government to pay off their college tuition. Though these Loans must be paid back, this is a great way to pay for college without actually having to work, in addition to your studies, while you are in college.

Federal PLUS Loans

Wednesday, July 26th, 2006

As a student entering college, it is very unlikely that you have a few spare checks lying around that you can cash and magically use to pay for college. Most college-aged students, ranging from late teens through mid-twenties, have no line of credit and cannot receive much money in loans if they need to do so in order to attend college. Therefore, a loan like the federal PLUS loan through the federal government and U.S. Department of Education makes it easy for you, as a potential college student, to use your parents’ line of credit in order to gain financing options for your higher education.

How Your Parents Can Help You Apply
If your parents have good credit and you obtain them a copy of the Direct PLUS loan application, you are well on your way to cracking the college books and arriving on campus in the fall. Keep in mind that in order to receive a federal PLUS loan, you must be a dependent potential undergraduate at any college or university in the U.S. You also must be planning on attending college for at least half-time during the upcoming semester. If these all apply to you, obtain a Direct PLUS loan application and promissory note, fill them out with signatures completed, and hand them in to the financial aid office at your college or university.

Fill Out A FAFSA Form First!
Have you tried filling out your FAFSA form yet? If not, you may already be entitled to financial aid and/or loans and scholarships that could benefit you! While it is not required for you to fill out the FAFSA form to receive a federal PLUS loan, be aware that you could receive thousands of dollars without even having to use your parents’ credit in the first place. Still, if you are not eligible for any other scholarships, the federal PLUS loan will enable you to receive financing for any portion of your college or university bill not covered by other financial aid (i.e. If college costs you $5000 a year and you already receive $4000 in financial aid, a PLUS loan will lend you the other $1000). Federal PLUS loans can help put you through college, even if you do not have a solid line of credit yet.

Financial Aid for Online Education

Tuesday, July 25th, 2006

If you haven’t already done so, now is the time to complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FASFA, for short. This is a straightforward application published by the Department of Education, which gives lenders an idea of what sort of funding you are entitled to. The application process is fairly simple and can be completed online in minutes. Once you’ve filled in the necessary information, you should receive, within a matter of a few days, a confirmation letter, of which programs you are eligible for. This process is free and simple to do, and it is the cornerstone of securing financial aid for your college program.

Once you have this information, you need to contact the Financial Aid office at the college that you want to attend. There are many types of financial aid packages available, ranging from work study programs to government aid. The financial aid officer will be able to provide the necessary forms for the different lending institutions and should be able to guide you through the decision making process.

After you have completed your loan applications, they will need to be sent to the school for verification and processing. Many banks will not release the funds directly to the student, only to the college at the start of the term. This makes it easier- and safer- for both the college and the student.

Securing funds for college is a fairly easy process that needn’t be stressful. The key to the whole process is being well organized and making sure that you meet all of the loan deadlines specified by both the Department of Education and your college’s financial aid office.]]>

Finding A Scholarship Or College Grant

Monday, July 24th, 2006

Fortunately, aid opportunities have also multiplied in recent years. Scholarships and grants were once thought of as only available for the poor or the brightest students. That is no longer true. These days, almost everyone is eligible for some type of award.

Free money for college can be divided into two basic categories: scholarships (usually merit based) and grants (usually need based). Of course, many other conditions apply to various awards. Minority status, gender, career plans, and field of study are the most common qualifiers for today’s financial aid awards. Almost everyone can use one of these categories to focus their search for aid.

One of the best sources for college grants is the federal government. Be sure to submit The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible. This will tell you if you are eligible for a Pell grant, and colleges will use this information to determine if you qualify for a school-sponsored grant. Private grant foundations may also require the FAFSA be completed before considering you for an award.

Ideally, a student would start looking for scholarships during the junior year of high school. This may seem early, but some awards require an application be submitted the year before you begin your first semester in college. Furthermore, collecting the names and contact information of prospective awards can take months. You must also factor in time for completing lengthy application forms, writing essays, and scheduling interviews.

In your search for scholarships, focus on three main sources. First, search your local community. Start with the high school councilor’s office, your local library, churches, community organizations, and any corporation that is based nearby. Next, contact the financial aid office of each college you are considering. They can tell you about all school-based awards that may not appear in the standard listings. Finally, use the Internet. The standard search engine is of some use, but dedicated scholarship search sites are a tremendous resource. Some of these data banks have up to 800,000 awards indexed. Best of all, you can search based on a personal profile that will match scholarships to your unique situation.

Of course, this article can only get you started in the right direction. College funding is a complicated process and it is easy to feel overwhelmed. Remember that almost half of all college students receive some type of aid, so the chances of success are good. With a dedicated and organized search plan, you can get your share too.]]>

Finding The Right Online Degree Program For You

Sunday, July 23rd, 2006

Review the websites of the three contending online degree programs one more time. Does anything stand out to you about how they explain their program? Is there anything that sticks out as a potential problem? For everything you like about their description of their program give them a point. For every concern you have take a point away or give them a minus point. Tally up all of the scores from this exercise and see if one clearly stands out as being more positive than the other. This is your instinctive response to how they present their material and remember that this is the main way that the online degree program will be presented to you after you enroll.

Next review again the questions that you asked of them while you were doing your research, and the answers that they provided. For every answer give the schools a point for a poor answer, two points for a good answer and three points for a great answer. This is a comparative review and note if one of the schools overall response is more positive than the others.

If you haven’t already done so make sure that your list of questions include the following topics:

How long does it take an average student to complete their degree?

How many hours do they anticipate an average student will spend on course work per week?

How old is the average age of students in their online degree program?

What are their transfer policies?

Who are the faculty members and what is their training background?

Do they have library resources and mentoring services available for online students?

In addition to those questions you will have already asked and received a response to technical, financial, and scheduling questions. Review all of the responses and once again and give the schools a point for a poor answer, two points for a good answer and three points for a great answer. This is your technical review.

Now you have three different ways to evaluate your options and out of this process you should have a clearer answer to the question of which online degree program may be right for you.]]>

Finite Element Analysis: Introduction

Saturday, July 22nd, 2006

American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). It serves as an introduction to the recent analysis discipline known as the finite element method. The author is an engineering consultant and expert witness specializing in finite element analysis.

FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS: Introduction
by Steve Roensch, President, Roensch & Associates

First in a four-part series

Finite element analysis (FEA) is a fairly recent discipline crossing the boundaries of mathematics, physics, engineering and computer science. The method has wide application and enjoys extensive utilization in the structural, thermal and fluid analysis areas. The finite element method is comprised of three major phases: (1) pre-processing, in which the analyst develops a finite element mesh to divide the subject geometry into subdomains for mathematical analysis, and applies material properties and boundary conditions, (2) solution, during which the program derives the governing matrix equations from the model and solves for the primary quantities, and (3) post-processing, in which the analyst checks the validity of the solution, examines the values of primary quantities (such as displacements and stresses), and derives and examines additional quantities (such as specialized stresses and error indicators).

The advantages of FEA are numerous and important. A new design concept may be modeled to determine its real world behavior under various load environments, and may therefore be refined prior to the creation of drawings, when few dollars have been committed and changes are inexpensive. Once a detailed CAD model has been developed, FEA can analyze the design in detail, saving time and money by reducing the number of prototypes required. An existing product which is experiencing a field problem, or is simply being improved, can be analyzed to speed an engineering change and reduce its cost. In addition, FEA can be performed on increasingly affordable computer workstations and personal computers, and professional assistance is available.

It is also important to recognize the limitations of FEA. Commercial software packages and the required hardware, which have seen substantial price reductions, still require a significant investment. The method can reduce product testing, but cannot totally replace it. Probably most important, an inexperienced user can deliver incorrect answers, upon which expensive decisions will be based. FEA is a demanding tool, in that the analyst must be proficient not only in elasticity or fluids, but also in mathematics, computer science, and especially the finite element method itself.

Which FEA package to use is a subject that cannot possibly be covered in this short discussion, and the choice involves personal preferences as well as package functionality. Where to run the package depends on the type of analyses being performed. A typical finite element solution requires a fast, modern disk subsystem for acceptable performance. Memory requirements are of course dependent on the code, but in the interest of performance, the more the better, with 512 Mbytes to 8 Gbytes per user a representative range. Processing power is the final link in the performance chain, with clock speed, cache, pipelining and multi-processing all contributing to the bottom line. These analyses can run for hours on the fastest systems, so computing power is of the essence.

One aspect often overlooked when entering the finite element area is education. Without adequate training on the finite element method and the specific FEA package, a new user will not be productive in a reasonable amount of time, and may in fact fail miserably. Expect to dedicate one to two weeks up front, and another one to two weeks over the first year, to either classroom or self-help education. It is also important that the user have a basic understanding of the computer’s operating system.

Next month’s article will go into detail on the pre-processing phase of the finite element method.
