An Online Degree Can Work For You

Friday, September 29th, 2006

Studying for an online degree is an excellent choice for many reasons and for people in a range of circumstances. You can work to your own flexible schedule and today there is a very wide range of subjects on offer. An online degree can give you respect from your work colleagues and bosses.

You can obtain an online degree in the fields of business, healthcare, education, law and others. Depending on the subject area, there are numerous levels of achievement, from a certificate of completion, an associate’s degree or even
a bachelors or masters degree. Certificates, associates and bachelors degrees require no previous college education. A masters degree, however, requires at least a bachelors degree prior to enrollment.

Depending on the type of online degree you want, the course work can take as little as six months to complete. For higher degrees or fields of intense study, the course work can take up to four years to complete. Most online law degrees take at least four years to finish.

Getting an online degree is more flexible for you than getting a degree from a traditional, on-site college. You can complete it over a period of time to a schedule that
fits your particular needs. You can study at night, on the weekends or even over your lunch hour. Plus, you can devote as many or as few hours a week to your studies as you choose to, finishing as quickly as you need. Most people devote at least twenty hours a week to their course work.

Secondly, an online degree is a self-paced program meaning that you can work as long on a particular session or lesson as you need. This means that you can take extra time on the more difficult classes without getting behind in your studies.

With today’s competitive work environment and extra long working hours, an online degree is the perfect solution if you wish to further your career. So whether you need to take classes on your schedule, obtain your degree in record time, or you just want the high level of education provided by an online degree, the Internet is a great place to go get yourself an online degree.]]>

Arbor Day – The Selflessness Of Trees

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

Arbor in Latin means a tree. The spirit of Arbor Day is to plant trees and care for them and help them grow strong. It is what we give back to nature. If we think about our ancestors, we can imagine the dependence on trees in those times. Trees were widely used for wood, fruits, flowers and the shade a tree gave. The earliest humans derived tremendous benefits from the trees. We are all obliged to trees. Please view these birds screensavers. Can birds survive without trees?

Think of a tree. Most of the trees grow from a small seed. Let us become a little philosophical. The seed makes a tree and the tree gives so many more seeds, who in turn give so many trees and in turn more seeds. How many trees does a seed contain? Infinite. Is this not an exciting thought? Look at these trees in this trees wallpaper. They all came from a single seed?

The trees stand alone on a piece of land. The roots go deep down the earth and hold the soil strongly. The tree gives leaves, wood, bark, fruits, flowers, sometimes different types of gums and shade for the tired souls. A tree gives all that it has got back to the animal world. In deep jungles, so many animals rest below the trees in the afternoons, and the birds make countless nests on the trees. Can one imagine the importance of trees in the ecological balance? It can not be measured. The butterflies know about that than many of us humans. Please view the joy of the butterflies in the butterfly screensavers.

Many of us have seen so many trees since our childhood that we never give a thought to them. Visit a desert and you will realize the blessing that are trees. The desert looks so desolate, without any growth without the trees. Where are the singing birds in a desert? Where are the fruits, the flowers, and the shade?

Trees are necessary for our growth, and they tell us about a selfless life. After you plant a tree and help it grow, it asks nothing from you for its lifetime. It only gives. That is the selflessness of trees and that is how a life must be lived by all of us. Give more and expect less in return. You will enjoy sending some links of Trees Screensavers and Trees wallpapers to your friends from www.screene.com]]>

Building Teams - You see it everywhere

Monday, September 11th, 2006

First of all, let’s focus on a college football team. Unlike professional sports, coaches have roughly a four-year time period to retain their players. After that period, an athlete’s eligibility is complete due to graduation. In order to fill the void left by graduated players, coaches rely heavily on recruiting new players to continue building the football team. Coaches look for the best athletes who have the capability to surpass those athletes before them, so that they can continue a winning team. Coaches face a challenging role to rebuild their program, depending on their previous team’s success. At the end of the football season, coaches must take the initiative to re-build their team each year to fill vacancies so their team can move forward again.

During college, I interned for a public relations firm, and on my first day, my supervisor welcomed me with an e-mail that read, Welcome to the team! At first, I felt that only organized athletics reserved the right to use the word team. On a mature level, I’ve realized companies stay healthy when they implement a team-like atmosphere in the workplace. Being on a team brings out motivation and competition in employees, and also helps them to unite, identify their roles on the team, and produce stronger results. I’ve attended many career sessions and with every employer I’ve met, they have emphasized their desire to hire college graduates to join their team. Like a college sports team, an employer needs to recruit prospective candidates to fulfill roles in their company.

Many companies utilize employees as team members because it is a fitting approach when they are competing in an industry. For example, popular competing organizations such as Pepsi and Coca-Cola use the team approach in the workplace. The work environment at Pepsi might have some teams who are directly competing against some rival teams at Coca-Cola. This competition and approach is healthy because it energizes employees to become active team members and promoters for their brand. As mentioned before, being on a team helps members to identify their individual roles in the company and along with motivating them in a competing industry.

You can apply team building skills in any organization. For example, universities that are accepting incoming freshmen will want candidates who will help maintain or even raise the academic standards for greater respect and reputation of their school. Those freshmen are building the university team to improve performance and image. Finally, a chairman will seek out candidates to fulfill his board to bring in fresh ideas and insight to his committee. The chairman is simply building his team for support. In any circumstance, building teams will build a foundation for any organization that wants to progress and move forward. With a purpose and vision to improve your organization, building your own team and improving team interaction will help you achieve outstanding results.]]>

Child Learning Styles

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

An important aspect to understand about learning styles of the children is that ultimately the learning style of your child is probably more of an eclectic mix of different styles rather than one that you could classify neatly and put in a box. Learning is greatly influenced by motivation. And what motivates can be directly influenced as the mood for the day, and the fatigue level or lack thereof.

There are several identifiable types of child learning styles as identified educational scholars. It is out of the scope of this article to go into each of these categories. However, it is important that you have at least a high level understanding of these different types of learning styles. Knowing of these and having a decent understanding of them will aid greatly in your curriculum decisions as you first begin to understand what type of learner your child is.

A bit of research on the internet will bring you back much information on the different types of child learning styles and how to recognize and tailor a program that best fits the style. The idea is to work to determine how you child learns then fine tune your curriculum to make use of that learning style. Accomplishing this will create an motivation filled environment. And motivation to learn set sails in the right direction.]]>

Coaching employees in the workplace

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

Meeting the expectations of a new job and being the new face among an established network of co-workers is an uncomfortable position for everyone. But you can find comfort that new hires everywhere face the same challenges.

All of us at one time or another has had those feelings of disconnection. Yet, if co-workers and managers take a responsibility by continually coaching and preparing new people for their jobs, they, as well as the novice, will benefit from the experience. This will ultimately benefit the company as a whole.

For The New Hires- Attaining new skills, learning the ropes of the job, and establishing him or herself in a new community, with the help of an experienced co-worker gives them valuable insight and knowledge about the job and community. Co-workers are their most accessible resources on the job. Veteran employees know what works best with their field of work.

For The Co-Worker- Because veteran employees have developed job knowledge and skills and are easily accessible, they are the most logical choice to coach, mentor and train a new employee. This opportunity offers the veteran employee a chance to develop their leadership skills. It also boosts self-confidence that others value their experience and dependability. With the duty to coach the new hires, a veteran employee takes stewardship for the new hires seeing that they learn all the aspects of the job. With manager coaching, this leadership can be developed further, giving them a chance for promotion later.

For The Manager- The manager is often overloaded with too many other responsibilities. Coaching employees through his or her veteran workers, helps maintain continuity of work protocol and efficiency. The new employee isn’t waiting for the manager to get time to explain more procedures. When his or her subordinates become proactive participants in the coaching of new hires, the manager gains more time to turn his or her attention to other employees as well. By coaching the veteran worker in training new employees, the manager begins to develop the potential of the veteran worker.

The relationship between the new hire and his or her co-workers and managers will become a valued partnership in the success of a company. Briefly, coaching employees guides new hires, develops leadership among employees, and provides a collaborative effort in the success of the company.]]>

Coaching Skills Does Matter At Chick–fil-A

Monday, August 28th, 2006

Phil – Operators are selected and are independent contractors for Chick-fil-A. We have some leverage with what they do, but they operate very independent from us. Growth opportunities for the operator can be an additional restaurant. Opportunities come as performance is monitored and the Operators are counseled and supported by the Business Consultants.

Scott – As independent contractors, they are the CEOs of their organizations. The contractor is the president of marketing, the president of human resources, and the president of operations. They are responsible wholly for their restaurant. You can imagine, being in the position, they have to deal with a lot of different people; they have to delegate a lot of responsibilities out. They have to provide insights and direction for all types of people. They are dealing with folks from high school aged team members on up to senior citizens. When you’re in a fast paced environment, dealing with 30 or 40 employees at a time, there are limited time constraints for being able to have some real effective opportunities to coach and counsel their team members.

Q – What are some specific coaching skills issues that your Operators face?

Phil – It’s a challenge to ease off some focus on the present, and be more responsible for the future. As that relates to coaching skills, it allows the Operators to work on the development of their own people to be more responsible for what is going on in the present so that they can focus more of their time on what is going on in the future.

Scott – One [issue] is always the lack of performance. We have quality requirements, so there’s an opportunity to work through. People may not follow procedures for a lot of different reasons. I think that the coaching model allows an Operator to work through each situation by defining the task or issue. There are a lot of opportunities to help a team member understand the value of the requirements and why they’re there. CMOE’s coaching skills model allows great opportunity for dialog. The person who is being coached feels more that it’s an opportunity for learning and development rather than punishment.

Q – Can you give me a specific example of the Coaching Skills model working?

Phil – I think as a manager and director of people, you need everything you can get. Certain steps of the Coaching Skills model affect people differently. I think what is does is it gives you a lot of different behaviors, some of which will work more successfully with some people than others. I found overall I’m more effective when I use the Coaching Skills model completely because one of the steps in the model will generally have an impact on most everyone.

Scott – I recently had a store become available, and I had four Operators ask for this location. So this model gave me a very effective process to go through and almost interview them to help them understand. It’s not just something that I can say “yes, you’re qualified” or “no, you’re not qualified.” It’s just given me a great process so that when we get through, the two of us feel good about the outcome or the decision that’s been made.

Q – What is the one thing that you would tell workshop participants before sending them out the door?

Phil – I would say that they don’t need to hide this. They should openly use the Coaching Skills Model. Apply it to every situation you can. I think you can be real open with this, whether it is for performance improvement or starting a project, or whatever.

Scott – They need to seek out every opportunity they can to use the model. And more importantly, use the individual behaviors or skills associated with that model. Use it in as many opportunities as you can. It’s just like a muscle, you know you’ve got to use it or lose it. It is probably the most powerful tool of influence that I’ve found, and it’s just because of the questions that I ask. First, it comes across that I really care, and second, I’m asking very insightful questions that are important to the issue and I’m not providing all of the answers. When I ask those questions, it either engages them emotionally or intellectually. It’s like you grab their heat or their head. It invokes emotion or thought. When you sit down and take somebody through that process, it’s just a very healthy process to follow and it just gets powerful results.

Q – It sounds like you’re telling me that effective Coaching Skills is not just something you do, it’s something you become?

Scott – Yes. That is the deal. You know, I have a very strong desire to become good at what we understand is coaching (skills). I kind of equate it with focusing on results and focusing on the relationship. We all want to get results, but I never want to get results at the expense of sacrificing the relationship. But if I spend all my energy on the relationship and not focus on results, we’ll be the best friends in the world, but neither one of us will be very effective. Both are important in the process.]]>

Creating a Positive Learning Environment

Monday, August 21st, 2006

Along with teaching the class, school, and

fire-drill rules, take the time to create a positive learning environment. How do

you do this? Here are some suggestions.

1. Make sure each child knows that he is

important to you as an individual. Give

eye contact and a pleasant greeting to

every child each morning. Look and sound enthusiastic when a child makes progress on a skill he is finding difficult. Anytime is a good time for a smile!

Parents, you can help by sending your child off to school on a positive note. If

you smile as you wish your child a nice day and say you love him, he is already

approaching the day with a positive outlook and will be more receptive to learning.

2. Teach positive sayings. Let your children know that you believe they can

learn and succeed. Here is a simple chant that may help…

I believe, I believe,

I believe you can do it!

I believe, I believe,

You believe it, too!!

Having positive sayings posted around the room may help children when they feel like giving up. Here is a chant for them to repeat to themselves…

I’ll try, I’ll try, I’ll try real hard.

I’ll try, I’ll try, I’ll try real hard!

‘Cause I can do it, I can do it, I can do it and I will!

I can do it, I can do it, I can do it and I will!

Parents, being positive with your children

will yield better results than being

negative. Remember that children learn at

their own pace and accept the small steps of progress along the way.

3. Teach your students to help rather than to laugh. It takes alot of bravery to

participate when you are unsure of yourself. Bring that to your class’

attention by doing some role playing. Ask

how they felt when their classmates laughed at them. Remind your pupils that

everyone is human and makes mistakes…but that it is okay and expected. You do not want them to fear being ridiculed if they ask a question or answer incorrectly. Take note of your students’ strengths and let them help you throughout the year.

4. Make a positive statement before giving

a correction. Your reaction when a child gets an answer wrong is also important. A positive statement, followed by a negative one, helps to soften the blow and remind students you care.

Parents, that goes for you, too. Always let your children hear that you love them,

first, and follow that statement with the

modification of behavior you want.

I hope these ideas are useful and set your year off on the right foot.

And remember…Reading is FUNdamental!]]>

Discover How Online College Classes Work

Sunday, August 13th, 2006

You can also get an online degree from top, accredited online colleges and online schools that may not be available in your local area. An online education is also a great option for non-traditional students, the handicapped, people in remote areas, and people with a full-time job or a schedule that doesn’t allow for a traditional education.

Distance education can be delivered in several ways. We will examine two of the many ways education can be delivered via the internet.

One of the most common is through live media. In this type of online classroom, students typically login to a chat room type environment that allows not only for text chat but also live audio chat, similar to many of the popular “instant messaging” programs that are widely used today. The lecture can be heard through the computer speakers or through a set of headphones. The students communicate with the teacher and other students by text chat or simply by talking into a PC microphone. The teacher can also allow students to view him/her in a smaller window on the monitor via a webcam. The lecture can also be recorded and posted to the school website to allow students to listen to the lecture and review the material at a later time according to their schedule, and as many times as necessary. This type of online class makes it necessary to be at the computer at a scheduled time each day.

One advantage to this type of online college classroom environment is the student receives live instruction with structured classes. It is well known that students working within in a structured setting have a higher probability of success of finishing their degree. An obvious disadvantage would be lack of scheduling flexibility.

Another variation of the online classroom setting involves text messages such as email and message boards. Each class may share a group mailbox or a message board system, which becomes the “electronic classroom”. The instructor generally posts lectures on the topic of study, posts the assignments, and provides discussion questions related to the topic. The student can view lectures, notes from the instructor and other students, and assigned projects. The student can also post messages or questions to the instructor and other students.

One advantage of this system is 24 hour access to course materials and the ability to work at one’s own pace without regard to scheduling. A disadvantage would be lack of direct contact with the instructor.

In both scenarios students are expected to logon to the class site a certain number of days per week. Students also can contact the instructor via e-mail to ask questions or receive answers. When assignments are due, students send them to the instructor online or by email, where they are graded and returned. Students may also have access to their individual performance reports by logging in to a website where that information is posted. Test may also be taken online. Typically, online classes last five to six weeks.

Although the degree of difficulty is the same for the online classroom as in a traditional setting, the internet has broken down many barriers and is providing educational opportunities for people worldwide that were not previously thought possible.]]>

Distance Learning Online

Saturday, August 5th, 2006

People are busier than ever, but still have the desire to improve their lifestyle with a better job. Many times the only way to get a better job is to begin or continue with education in order to learn essential skills and often a degree in order to be of value in a new position. Finding the time to attend classes at local schools or universities is almost impossible for most people. Not only that, but tuition fees can be incredibly expensive and not affordable for many. With such a huge market of individuals looking to complete higher education levels, a market has emerged offering busy people affordable classes that can be completed at home with distance learning online.

There are hundreds of schools that offer distance learning online options available to anyone interested in advancing in education. However, not all schools that offer distance learning online are accredited and will not be recognized when applying for a new job. It is important to verify that any schools that offer distance learning online can offer proof that they are accredited and are recognized by the appropriate educational institutions to make it a genuine educational institution.

Each individual considering completing school by distance learning online will need to assess their commitment and organizational skills in order to see if they can truly commit to a self-guided learning experience. Much of what is learned through distance learning online is done independently and discipline is an important part of successfully completing distance learning online.

People who commit to distance learning online find that they often do as well if not better than people who are attending a traditional classroom environment do. Motivation and setting personal goals is an essential part of their learning experience and that is all of the support that they need. Students who use distance learning online are so disciplined that they rarely find that they put off assignments. Completing an assignment without the pressure of attending a set class time as well as the motivation to complete their education as soon as possible tends to be a constructive learning environment for many.

Students of distance learning online tend to have one skill in particular in common and that is excellent reading and understanding skills. These students don’t need or often like to listen to lectures or even video. The written word is the best way that information is taken in by distance learners. With adequate reading comprehension skills, completing college level courses without the immediate guidance of an instructor is easily done.

Distance learners are unique in the fact that they are often not afraid to use the word ‘no’. Distractions can become overwhelming with the telephone, television, spouses, children, pets and so many other things that attempt to draw attention away from learning. Students completing distance learning online know that they have to disconnect the phone, turn off the television, let the dog out, send the kids out to play or simply just tell everyone that there are to be no interruptions during specified times in order to complete school work.

When choosing distance learning online, a person recognizes that they are not focused on the support from other students or social interaction. They are focused on the completion of their education and make that their priority. Distance learning online is not the right choice for everyone, but those who have just a few of the conditioned qualities mentioned above might want to consider distance learning online as a realistic educational option.
